Artist's Description

Guisborough is a place steeped in history. "Gighesbore" is listed in the Domesday Book and the ruined Gisborough Priory dates back to the 12th century. Nowadays the priory is a relaxing sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of Westgate, Guisborough in north Yorkshire, England) has a main thoroughfare, where you can also experience its markets, traditional and specialist, which have been held along the cobbled streets for over 600 years.

The ruins of Gisborough Priory are a "must see thing" when visiting this area. The Priory of St Mary of Gisborough was one of the earliest houses of the Augustinian order in England. It was founded in 1119 by Robert de Brus, on land bequeathed by William the Conqueror. The community prospered, rebuilding the priory on a grand scale at the end of the 12th century and again after a catastrophic fire in 1289. At the time of its suppression by Henry VIII in 1539, Gisborough was the fourth richest religious house in Yorkshire The Norman gatehouse...

About Shirley Mitchell

Shirley Mitchell

Every photograph is a unique moment in time, never to be repeated. I live in the beautiful county of Surrey in England where the scenery, the lighting and the change of seasons can only be described as inspirational. What started as a hobby many years ago has developed into an obsession leading me to take photographic courses and trying to improve my skills. Being out and about with my camera is perhaps one of my greatest joys. My interests are varied but I get the biggest buzz from flowers, landscapes and architecture. I sincerely hope that I am able to share my enthusiasm by sharing my images.
