Description
Chapter House was where the day to day business of the York Minster was run and begun in about 1260. It is a superb example of the Gothic decorated style which was then in vogue. The windows lead your eye upwards the marvelous ribbed vault of the ceiling.
York's cathedral church in England is one of the finest medieval buildings in Europe. The Minster is also known as St Peter's, its full name being the 'Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York'.
There has been a church on the site dating back to 627, a stone Saxon church survived Viking invasion in 866 but was ransacked by William the Conqueror's forces in 1069. William appointed his own Archbishop, Thomas, who built a great Norman cathedral on the site. The present Gothic-style church was completed in 1472 after several centuries of building. There are many layers of history below the foundations with Roman columns being unearthed when repairs were carried out.
