Description
An ornate Gothic archway with intricate carvings and gold embellishments highlights the entrance to further parts of the historic York Minster in york, Yorkshire, England. The architectural details include symmetrical patterns and delicate ironwork.
York's cathedral church in England is one of the finest medieval buildings in Europe. The Minster is also known as St Peter's, its full name being the 'Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York'.
There has been a church on the site dating back to 627, a stone Saxon church survived Viking invasion in 866 but was ransacked by William the Conqueror's forces in 1069. William appointed his own Archbishop, Thomas, who built a great Norman cathedral on the site. The present Gothic-style church was completed in 1472 after several centuries of building. There are many layers of history below the foundations with Roman columns being unearthed when repairs were carried out.
