Description
Located on the outskirts of the English village of Compton, Surrey England you will find the unusual and beautiful Watts Chapel.
Watts Gallery is situated nearby, built by George Fredric Watts (1817-1904), who was widely considered to be the greatest painter of the Victorian age. In 1886, Watts aged 69 married his pupil Mary Fraser-Tyler, aged 36 and a few years later, in 1891, they moved out of London to Compton, where he built a house called Limnerslease and a gallery for his art, which was opened just before his death in 1904.
Mary was also an artist and she designed Watts Cemetery Chapel when Compton Parish Council bought the land for a new cemetery in 1895. This extraordinary circular building is covered in celtic and art nouveau decoration. Local villagers were invited to decorate the chapel under her guidance. Each member of her class had a separate job and 74 Compton villagers took part. G.F. Watts paid for the project and also painted a version of The All-Pervading for the altar only three months before he died.
Mary Watts was deeply involved with the Home Arts and Industries Association. She founded the Compton Potters’ Arts Guild, producing terracotta garden ornaments.
